A precision marksman from Walla Walla High School JROTC Rifle Team was crowned state women’s champion at the Washington State Junior Olympic Air Rifle Championship match this weekend in Spokane. Cadet Major Sabrina Keenan’s score of 385 out of 400 topped the competition in matches shot in 3 separate locations throughout the state.
The Junior Olympics Rifle match, sanctioned by USA Shooting and the Olympic Training Center, consists of two events; an air rifle match and a smallbore rifle match. Both matches can separately qualify individuals for the Junior Olympic National Championship match, held in April at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. The smallbore match consists of 20 record shots from each of three positions; prone, kneeling and standing. The air rifle match consists of 60 shots from the standing position men and 40 shots for women.
The match began on the morning of December 12th with the smallbore event at 9:00 am. The top shooter at the Spokane location was Spokane Rifle Club shooter David Wright with a 563 out of 600 points. WAHI’s Enger came in 2nd place with a 560, followed by Spokane’s Cassidy Wilson in 3rd place and Keenan in 4th with a 549. The Blue Devil smallbore team took second place in the smallbore match, with Cadet Captain Evan Jameson’s 549 and Cadet Major Madeline Erikson’s 535 rounding out the scoring team.
After a short break to change rifles, the air rifle match began at noon. The Blue Devil Team consisting of Enger, Keenan and Erikson posted a total score of 1704 out of 1800, beating out Spokane’s Gold Team by 24 points for first place.
Individually, the men’s event at the Spokane location was won by Enger with a 578 out of 600, and Keenan took gold statewide in the women’s event. Both will receive invitations to the Junior Olympic National match in Colorado this April at the Olympic Training Center.
